11 Important: Support for the Android Developer Tools (ADT) in Eclipse is ending,
12 per our <a href=
13 "http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2015/06/an-update-on-eclipse-android-developer.html"
14 class="external-link">announcement. You should migrate your app development projects to
15 Android Studio as soon as possible. For more information on transitioning to Android Studio, see
16 Migrating to Android Studio.
17

18
19
Android offers a custom plugin for the Eclipse IDE, called Android
20Development Tools (ADT). This plugin provides a powerful, integrated
21environment in which to develop Android apps. It extends the capabilities
22of Eclipse to let you quickly set up new Android projects, build an app
23UI, debug your app, and export signed (or unsigned) app packages (APKs) for distribution.
24

25
26
You should install the ADT plugin
27only if you already have an Eclipse installation that you want to continue using.
28Your existing Eclipse installation must meet these requirements:

29

30
Eclipse 3.7.2 (Indigo) or greater
31
Note: Eclipse 3.6 (Helios) is no longer
32supported with the latest version of ADT.

33
Eclipse JDT plugin (included
34in most Eclipse IDE packages)

35
JDK 6
36 (JRE alone is not sufficient)

37
Not compatible with GNU Compiler for Java (gcj)

38

51
Note: The Android Developer Tools update site requires
52 a secure connection. Make sure the update site URL you enter starts with HTTPS.

53

54
Click OK.

55
In the Available Software dialog, select the checkbox next to Developer Tools and click

60
If you get a security warning saying that the authenticity or validity of
61the software can't be established, click OK.

62
When the installation completes, restart Eclipse.

63

64
65
66
67
Configure the ADT Plugin

68
69
Once Eclipse restarts, you
70 must specify the location of your Android SDK directory:

71
72

73
In the "Welcome to Android Development" window that appears, select Use
74existing SDKs.

75
Browse and select the location of the Android SDK directory you recently
76downloaded and unpacked.

77
Click Next.

78

79
80
Your Eclipse IDE is now set up to develop Android apps, but you need to add
81the latest SDK platform tools and an Android platform to your environment.
82To get these packages for your SDK, continue to
83Adding Platforms and Packages.

86
Troubleshooting ADT Installation

87
88
If you are having trouble downloading the ADT plugin after following the
89steps above and you are behind a firewall (such as a corporate firewall), make sure that
90you have properly configured your proxy settings in Eclipse. In Eclipse,
91you can configure proxy information from the main Eclipse menu in
92Window (on Mac OS X, Eclipse) >
93Preferences > General > Network
94Connections.
95

96
97
If you are still unable to use Eclipse to download the ADT plugin as a
98remote update site, you can download the ADT zip file to your local machine and
99manually install it:

100
101

102
Download the ADT Plugin zip file (do not unpack it):
103
104

105

106
Package

107
Size

108
MD5 Checksum

109

110

111

112      {@adtZipDownload}
113

114
{@adtZipBytes} bytes

115
{@adtZipChecksum}

116

117

118

119
120

121
Start Eclipse, then select Help > Install New
122Software.

123
Click Add, in the top-right corner.

124
In the Add Repository dialog, click Archive.

125
Select the downloaded {@adtZipDownload} file and click OK.

126
Enter "ADT Plugin" for the name and click OK.
127
In the Available Software dialog, select the checkbox next to Developer Tools and click
128Next.

129
In the next window, you'll see a list of the tools to be downloaded. Click
130Next.

131
Read and accept the license agreements, then click Finish.
132
If you get a security warning saying that the authenticity or validity of
133the software can't be established, click OK.

134
When the installation completes, restart Eclipse.

135

136
137
To update your plugin once you've installed using the zip file, you will have
138to follow these steps again instead of the default update instructions.

139
140
Other install errors

141
142
Note that there are features of ADT that require some optional
143Eclipse packages (for example, WST). If you encounter an error when
144installing ADT, your Eclipse installation might not include these packages.
145For information about how to quickly add the necessary packages to your
146Eclipse installation, see the troubleshooting topic
147ADT
148Installation Error: "requires plug-in org.eclipse.wst.sse.ui".

149
150
For Linux users

151
If you encounter this error when installing the ADT Plugin for Eclipse:
152

153An error occurred during provisioning.
154Cannot connect to keystore.
155JKS

156

157...then your development machine lacks a suitable Java VM. Installing Sun
158Java 6 will resolve this issue and you can then reinstall the ADT
159Plugin.
