You should migrate your app development projects to 15 Android Studio as soon as possible. For more information on transitioning to Android Studio, see 16 <a href="{@docRoot}sdk/installing/migrate.html">Migrating to Android Studio</a>. 17</p> 18 19<p>Android offers a custom plugin for the Eclipse IDE, called Android 20Development Tools (ADT). This plugin provides a powerful, integrated 21environment in which to develop Android apps. It extends the capabilities 22of Eclipse to let you quickly set up new Android projects, build an app 23UI, debug your app, and export signed (or unsigned) app packages (APKs) for distribution. 24</p> 25 26<p>You should install the ADT plugin 27only if you already have an Eclipse installation that you want to continue using. 28Your existing Eclipse installation must meet these requirements:</p> 29 <ul> 30 <li><a href="http://eclipse.org/mobile/">Eclipse</a> 3.7.2 (Indigo) or greater 31<p class="note"><strong>Note:</strong> Eclipse 3.6 (Helios) is no longer 32supported with the latest version of ADT.</p></li> 33 <li>Eclipse <a href="http://www.eclipse.org/jdt">JDT</a> plugin (included 34in most Eclipse IDE packages) </li> 35 <li><a href="http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html">JDK 6</a> 36 (JRE alone is not sufficient)</li> 37 <li><strong>Not</strong> compatible with GNU Compiler for Java (gcj)</li> 38 </ul> 39 40 41<h2 id="Download">Download the ADT Plugin</h2> 42 43<p>To add the ADT plugin to Eclipse:</p> 44<ol> 45 <li>Start Eclipse, then select <strong>Help</strong> > <strong>Install New 46Software</strong>.</li> 47 <li>Click <strong>Add</strong>, in the top-right corner.</li> 48 <li>In the Add Repository dialog that appears, enter "ADT Plugin" for the <em>Name</em> and the 49following URL for the <em>Location</em>: 50 <pre>https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/</pre> 51 <p class="note"><strong>Note:</strong> The Android Developer Tools update site requires 52 a secure connection. Make sure the update site URL you enter starts with HTTPS.</p> 53 </li> 54 <li>Click <strong>OK</strong>.</li> 55 <li>In the Available Software dialog, select the checkbox next to Developer Tools and click 56<strong>Next</strong>.</li> 57 <li>In the next window, you'll see a list of the tools to be downloaded. Click 58<strong>Next</strong>. </li> 59 <li>Read and accept the license agreements, then click <strong>Finish</strong>. 60 <p>If you get a security warning saying that the authenticity or validity of 61the software can't be established, click <strong>OK</strong>.</p></li> 62 <li>When the installation completes, restart Eclipse. </li> 63</ol> 64 65 66 67<h2 id="Configure">Configure the ADT Plugin</h2> 68 69<p>Once Eclipse restarts, you 70 must specify the location of your Android SDK directory:</p> 71 72<ol> 73 <li>In the "Welcome to Android Development" window that appears, select <strong>Use 74existing SDKs</strong>.</li> 75 <li>Browse and select the location of the Android SDK directory you recently 76downloaded and unpacked.</li> 77 <li>Click <strong>Next</strong>.</li> 78</ol> 79 80<p>Your Eclipse IDE is now set up to develop Android apps, but you need to add 81the latest SDK platform tools and an Android platform to your environment. 82To get these packages for your SDK, continue to 83<a href="{@docRoot}sdk/installing/adding-packages.html">Adding Platforms and Packages</a>.</p> 84 85 86<h2 id="Troubleshooting">Troubleshooting ADT Installation</h2> 87 88<p>If you are having trouble downloading the ADT plugin after following the 89steps above and you are behind a firewall (such as a corporate firewall), make sure that 90you have properly configured your proxy settings in Eclipse.
