This document 27provides links to the web sites for several original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), 28where you can download the appropriate USB driver for your device. However, this list is 29not exhaustive for all available Android-powered devices.</p> 30 31<p>If you're developing on Mac OS X or Linux, then you probably don't need to install a USB driver. 32To start developing with your device, read <a 33href="{@docRoot}tools/device.html">Using Hardware Devices</a>.</p> 34 35<p>The Google USB Driver is <strong>required for Windows only</strong> in order to perform 36<a href="{@docRoot}tools/help/adb.html">adb</a> debugging with any of 37the <strong>Google Nexus devices</strong>. The one exception is the 38Galaxy Nexus: the driver for Galaxy Nexus is distributed by <a 39href="http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/GT-I9250TSGGEN">Samsung</a> 40(listed as model GT-I9250TSGGEN).</p> 41 42 43 44<h2 id="InstallingDriver">Installing a USB Driver</h2> 45 46<p>First, find the appropriate driver for your device from the <a href="#Drivers">OEM drivers</a> 47table below.</p> 48 49<p>Once you've downloaded your USB driver, follow the instructions below to install or upgrade the 50driver, based on your version of Windows and whether you're installing for the first time 51or upgrading an existing driver.</p> 52 53<p class="note"><strong>Tip:</strong> When you finish the USB driver installation, 54see <a 55href="{@docRoot}tools/device.html">Using Hardware Devices</a> for 56other important information about using an Android-powered device for 57development.</p> 58 59<ol class="nolist"> 60 <li><a href="#Win7">Windows 7</a></li> 61 <li><a href="#WinVista">Windows Vista</a></li> 62</ol> 63 64 65<p class="caution"><strong>Caution:</strong> 66You may make changes to <code>android_winusb.inf</code> file found inside 67<code>usb_driver\</code> (for example, to add support for other devices), 68however, this will lead to security warnings when you install or upgrade the 69driver. Making any other changes to the driver files may break the installation 70process.</p> 71 72 73<h3 id="Win7">Windows 7</h3> 74 75 76<p>To install the Android USB driver on Windows 7 for the first time:</p> 77<ol> 78 <li>Connect your Android-powered device to your computer's USB port.</li> 79 <li>Right-click on <em>Computer</em> from your desktop or Windows Explorer, 80 and select <strong>Manage</strong>.</li> 81 <li>Select <strong>Devices</strong> in the left pane.</li> 82 <li>Locate and expand <em>Other device</em> in the right pane.</li> 83 <li>Right-click the device name (such as <em>Nexus S</em>) and select <strong>Update 84 Driver Software</strong>. 85 This will launch the Hardware Update Wizard.</li> 86 <li>Select <strong>Browse my computer for driver software</strong> and click 87 <strong>Next</strong>.</li> 88 <li>Click <strong>Browse</strong> and locate the USB driver folder. Windows 124 will detect the device and launch the Found New Hardware wizard.</li> 125 <li>Select <strong>Locate and install driver software</strong>.</li> 126 <li>Select <strong>Don't search online</strong>.</li> 127 <li>Select <strong>I don't have the disk. Show me other options</strong>.</li> 128 <li>Select <strong>Browse my computer for driver software</strong>.</li> 129 <li>Click <strong>Browse</strong> and locate the USB driver folder. (The Google USB 130Driver is located in {@code <sdk>\extras\google\usb_driver\}.) As long as you specified the 131exact location of the 132 installation package, you may leave <strong>Include subfolders</strong> checked or 133 unchecked—it doesn't matter.</li> 134 <li>Click <strong>Next</strong>. Vista may prompt you to confirm the privilege elevation 135 required for driver installation.
